Three Men in a Boat
Project type
Publication Design
Date
Fall 2024
OVERVIEW:
The project focuses on reevaluating and redesigning the cover, sleeve, and additional illustrations for *Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)* by Jerome K. Jerome. Originally intended as a serious guide about traveling down the Thames, the novel became a humorous story of three men—“J” (the narrator), George, Harris—and a dog, as they encounter various misadventures during a boating holiday. The novel is known for its clever humor and enduring appeal.
OBJECTIVE:
The goal of the project was to reinterpret the visual elements of the book, creating new illustrations for the cover, sleeve, and additional scenes, with a specific emphasis on illustration. The design aims to capture the wit and humor of the story, moving away from traditional depictions of the men in their boat.
SOLUTION:
The design solution expands the world-building of the book, using playful and abstracted vector illustrations. The new cover depicts the men carrying their boat while being chased by more proper members of society, with camping essentials and provisions falling behind them. The design engages the reader by emphasizing the comical misadventures of the characters. Additional illustrations further highlight key scenarios from the novel, enhancing the visual narrative.
